In today’s world everyone is connected. A little while ago, I went to a youth leadership conference. I met people from all over the globe; England, Singapore, Brazil, China, Japan, California, Iowa, and many other states and countries. By the end of our two weeks in Washington DC and New York City, we had all become the best of friends. Instead of exchanging mailing addresses we all exchanged e-mails and facebook urls to keep in touch with each other. That is when my love affair with facebook began, and it has continued ever since. This article, just points out how dependent we have all become on social media and other technology to keep us connected to the world around us. Barely anyone writes letters to each other or sends mail through the post office anymore. E-mail and text messaging have taken over. I understand that text messaging is easier than being on the phone with someone for hours at a time, like in the article it mentioned that people preferred text messaging to calling because it was easier and cheaper.
The part of the article that intrigued me the most was talking about Facebook and when the “news feed” first appeared. “Just about every little thing you changed on your page was now instantly blasted out to hundreds of friends, including potentially mortifying bits of news — Tim and Lisa broke up; Persaud is no longer friends with Matthew — and drunken photos someone snapped, then uploaded and tagged with names. Facebook had lost its vestigial bit of privacy. For students, it was now like being at a giant, open party filled with everyone you know, able to eavesdrop on what everyone else was saying, all the time.” It is true that any kind of privacy was now really taken away. I find it funny that I still go on my facebook and scroll down my newsfeed to get the latest news on all my friends and what is happening. I think it is sad though, because this can lead to unwanted drama between high school students. Though I plan to use facebook to my advantage once I am a teacher, I want my students to feel safe while using it. I want to use facebook as a way to introduce my students to characters, have online discussions about books or stories we are reading, so that they feel interested in the topic.
